Art and Design should unmask and uncover our singular and plural lives, - our lived experience, no matter how unacceptable and repressed or neglected such experience may be. Art and Design must articulate and inspire communication of real, often difficult lived-through experience, rather than operate as a substitute for it.

- Krzysztof Wodiczko

Using jewellery as a medium I have set out to visually investigate the words of Krzysztof Wodiczko. My work is not about finding answers, but about continuous research into lived experiences, uncovering and discovering new layers of human complexity. It is an investigation into a theme where I, as the maker, am driven by a curiosity to question all aspects of a given subject - pros and cons - in order to provoke thought. It is about creating room for debate and discussion in a different way than fine art does, embracing the functionality of the things made, bringing the critique closer to the audience and extending the dialogue to the public sphere.

Jewellery today as a critical practice is a challenge to both the audience and the maker, but by being real and functional, I believe jewellery can carry on an ideological objective integrating modern strategies whilst slipping into society.

Getting my inspiration from real life stories via interviews or newspaper cuttings I hope to create my own visual language peeling away any hidden layers in order to reveal real stories of human complexity situated in the minefield of dark poetry. The intellectual engagement between story and piece is fundamental in order for it to become part of a broader social context.

The material, scale and form of the piece are determined by the particular qualities behind the idea, which to me is the key aspect since I wish to challenge the perception of today’s jewellery, exploring how I as a visual communicator can be part of a political, environmental and social debate.
